Sart, located on İzmir-Ankara highway at 70 kilometers distance to Manisa was the capital of the Lydia state. The city was a source of power both politically and economically in the 6th and 7th centuries BC. The Lydians gained a considerable part of their wealth from operating the gold mines around Paktolos River which is now called Sart Çayı (Sart Stream). Also, King Midas got rid of his power of turning everything he touches into gold by being washed in this river.
Artemis Temple belonging to the Hellenistic period, Marble Backyard -Jimnasyuö Complex and the Synagogue that is thought to have been built after the earthquake in the 17th century AD are some of the worth seeing remnants in Sart. |
