Manisa, which is located at a distance of 36 kilometers from İzmir between
Spil Mountain and Gediz River and in the north of İzmir-İstanbul Highway, is one
of the important cities of the Aegean Region. According to Homers the first
settlers were the Magnets coming back from the Wars of Troy in XIV BC. Manisa,
which lived through all of Hittite, Aka, Frigian, Lydian, Hellenistic, Roman and
Byzantine sovereignties, was called Magnesia in the antique era. In 1313 the
name of the city was changed into Manisa by Saruhanogullari after they seized it
from Byzantines and afterwards the city was made the center of the principality.
Many remnants that belong to these civilizations have reached our present day.
Manisa, governed by the sultans’ sons between the years of 1437-1595 during the
time of the Ottomans, was reconstructed to a great extent by the sultans’ sons
and their families with mosques, fountains, bridges, madrasahs and similar works
and hence the city became an important center in terms of social, administrative
and economic aspects in the XIVth century.
At our present day Manisa does not only attract the attention of increasing
number of tourists each year on account of its historical and natural beauties,
ruins, museum, Spil Mountain National Park and Mesir festivities but it was also
chosen as the most convenient investment city of the future in Europe by
Financial Times in year 2004 and hence it is one of our important cities in
agricultural, industrial and commercial aspects. |
