Kula,Gördes and some of the villages of the Yunt Mountain have been important carpet business centers of the country since the 17th and 18th centuries. These places are famous with their prayer rugs rather than their floor rugs. Gördes, a district of Manisa, was such a famous carpet center that in the 17th and 18th century all the prayer rugs in Europe and America were almost named by “Gördes”. Besides, one of the weaving techniques used by Turkish people which is the double knotting is named as “Gördes Knot”in the literature. Gördes prayer rugs were used as an example in the carpet business centers such as Bandırma, Bursa, İstanbul and Kayseri established in the 16. century. Gördes Prayer rugs still keep their traditional style with larger knots. Kula Prayer rugs observed in the 17th century for the very first time are woven with double knot technique and are named with different names such as Kömürcü, Kula, Manzaralı Kula depending on their patterns. On the Yunt Mountain Plateau in the north of Manisa there are about 60 villages established by the Turkmen tribes who stopped nomadic life in the 19th century. In some of these villages rug weaving is still available as a handcraft. These rugs are manufactured by using pure wool, natural paint and traditional patterns. |
